Almanac Collection
Scope and Contents
The Almanac collection includes 247 American almanacs dating from 1771 through 1967. There are a variety of types of almanacs including agricultural, medical, commercial and general editions. Also included are pioneer guides, political registers, telephone almanacs and German language publications. Each almanac is documented by year, title, publisher and place of publication. The almanacs originate from New England, the east coast, and the Midwest, with a few publications from California. The variety of subjects and locales lends a valuable diversity to the collection. Information within the almanacs includes calendars, astronomical information, predictions, literature, jokes and agricultural data. Before newspapers became widely available, a primary source of information was the almanac. Today these resources serve as cultural and factual illustrations of early American life.
