Biographical / Historical
Malcolm Leonard Gabriel was born in Trimble, Ohio on December 17, 1911 to John Arthur Gabriel (born 1888) and Grace May Hayes (born 1887). He married Ann Regina Stone (born February 5, 1919 in Columbus, Ohio) and they had two children Ann and Mary who were both born after World War II. (1) Growing up Malcolm lived in Shawnee and The Plains before moving to Columbus in the 9th grade. (2)
Malcolm served in World War II as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division, traveling to Europe via Africa, then to Italy, France, and the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium. He was injured during the D-Day invasion of France. His daughter Ann explains, “My parents had a code so my father could let my mother know what was going on. For example, my father had already informed my mother that he had been wounded on D-Day but he was recovering in a hospital in London before someone from the army came to tell her. All she was told was that he had been wounded in battle. Thankfully, she already knew he was OK.” (2)
