Historical Note
"The Ohio Land Company was organized in 1786-1787 for the purpose of settling the Northwest Territory. On April 7, 1788 Rufus Putnam and 40 others established the settlement of Marietta. The Connecticut Land Company, about 1800, was busy selling Government Lands on Lake Erie, which detracted from the Ohio Company's sale, and in 1820, Putnam combined the Ohio Land Company with George Turner.
John Nichols and Thomas Nixon of Framingham, Massachusetts were large purchasers of land for speculation. Sometime before 1820 two of Mr. Nixon's sons moved to Ohio. The letters from this date cover their own living problems as they wrote to their father or brother back home. Most of the letters were sent by mail, and the date of mailing carefully noted. The letters describe land values, living conditions and general weather conditions as it affected crops and healt hat the start of the state of Ohio." - from Dealer's catalog
