Eve D. Chubb diaries
Scope and Content
The collection contains two diaries that Eve D. Chubb (EDC) updated daily on a European trip from 1893 to 1894 with her husband Edwin Watt Chubb (EWC). They also traveled with the Noss family, Theo N. Noss, Mary Noss, and their daughter Mary. Theo Noss was the principal of the California Pennsylvania Normal School and was taking a year's leave. The Chubbs had just resigned from working at the California Pennsylvania State Normal School.
The first diary begins on July 13, 1893. EDC wrote about her travels through Europe, beginning in the United Kingdom. They traveled by train through Pennsylvania, and then were on a ship for nine days from New York to the Isle of Night. She described customs in England before she went to London. EDC traveled all around the United Kingdom to cities such as Cambridge, Oxford, and Stratford. Throughout the journal, Chubb details their trips to attractions in the cities and to educational lectures at the universities. She visits Cambridge University, cemeteries in Cambridge and comments on the graves she sees. They also visit Shakespeare's hometown and see much related to William Shakespeare. In September, they traveled to Berlin, going through Amsterdam on the way. The rest of the diary accounts their stay in Berlin, where they both took classes and EWC was involved with the university there.
The second diary, dated November 21st 1893 to June 15th 1894, is largely an account of their time in Berlin. EDC writes about the city, its sights, entertainment, politics, events, and people she met. Entertainment for the Chubbs consisted of dinner out, concerts, the theatre, cafes, and church. The Chubbs also traveled around Europe, around Germany, Italy, the Vatican, Switzerland, and France. In May they traveled to London, where they stayed until they left for America in June.
