“The Limitations Upon Intellectual Attainments” sermon, 1874
Folder One contains a 37-page, handwritten draft of the 1874 sermon originally titled, “The Limitations Upon Intellectual Attainments.” The one-sided draft is on 7 ½” x 10” paper. The leaves are loose and the draft includes many cross-outs and revisions. The paper is discolored and the ink is faded, but the writing is quite legible. The condition of the paper with regard to aging in the remainder of the record series is generally the same. All drafts in the series are hand-written.
“Our Mental Limitations” sermon, 1874
Folder Two contains a 7” x 8 1/2'”, 44-page, two-sided revision of the 1874 sermon, retitled as, “Our Mental Limitations.” The paper is two-hole punched and the pages fastened together with red string.

Folder Three contains a 35-page draft, with revisions, of the sermon, “The Race of Life” (1875) on 8” x 10” lined paper. The leaves are sewn at the spine.

Folder Four contains a 28-page, two-sided, much-revised, draft of the sermon, “Reason the Supreme Guide of Life” (1876). There is a single-page, tattered insert loose in the manuscript, which is sewn at the spine.

Folder Five contains a 24-page, two-sided, 8” x 10” draft of the sermon, “The Gift of Power” (1877), with revisions; sewn at the spine.

Folder Six contains a 41-page, two-sided draft, with revisions, on 7” x 9” paper, sewn at the spine, of the sermon, “The Life of Duty” (1878).
“The Duty of Example" sermon, 1879
Folder Seven contains a 39-page, two-sided draft on 7” x 9” paper, sewn at the spine, of the sermon, “The Duty of Example” (1879). Inserted in the manuscript is a folded clipping (“The Independent”) and a single 5” x 8” page of notes, handwritten in pencil.
“The Antagonism Between the Self and the World” or “The Soul and the World” sermon, 1881
Folder Eight contains a 36-page, two-sided, 7” x 8 ½” draft with commercially printed cover. The booklet is three-hole punched, but not fastened. The sermon (1881) is entitled, “The Antagonism Between the Self and the World” or “The Soul and the World.” Inserted in the manuscript are many handwritten notes in pencil, on variously sized papers, as well as two printed (typeset) university-related announcements.

Folder Nine contains a one-sided, 23-page draft of the sermon, “Freedom by Knowledge of the Truth" (1882). The 8” x 10” leaves are not bound.
