The study tested nativ e speakers and learners of Chinese and English in processing their native a nd foreign languages. The results reflect a word-restoration effect in read ing one’s native language. The findings indicate that frequent function wor ds\, even when absent\, are not disregarded by native speakers but rather a re treated as necessary by them. They also indicate a developmental progres sion during reading.
