Algebra Seminar | Preserver problems concerning rank-one matrices, Aug. 30

The Mathematics Department Algebra Seminar features  Hayden Julius from Youngstown State University discussing " Preserver problems concerning rank-one matrices" on Tuesday, Aug. 30, from 4-5 p.m. via Zoom.

Abstract : Linear maps on matrix rings preserving the set of idempotent matrices are well-studied and have a simple description as a Jordan automorphism. In this talk, we explore a similar preserver problem for idempotents of a specified rank and present a similar result. There are limitations: the available method (fundamental theorem of projective geometry) does not work for the rank-one case. In this talk, we will discuss the above problem at length and some possible approaches to address the rank-one case, but certain obstacles arise.

Note: the linear algebra part of this talk is accessible for advanced undergrads and graduate students alike.
