Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe is a 2022 coming-of-age romantic drama film about two Mexican-American teenage boys who become friends in 1987 El Paso, Texas. The film is based on the 2012 novel of the same name by Benjamin Alire Sáenz, who also co-wrote the screenplay with director Aitch Alberto. The film stars Max Pelayo as Aristotle Mendoza and Reese Gonzales as Dante Quintana, and also features Verónica Falcón, Kevin Alejandro, Eva Longoria, and Eugenio Derbez.
The film explores themes of friendship, self-discovery, first love, and self-acceptance. It follows the boys as they navigate their friendship, which is complicated when Dante wants it to turn romantic, but Ari is hesitant. The film also explores themes of racial and ethnic identity, sexuality, family relationships, and intellectualism. The boys' internal struggles are largely due to the homophobic world they live in, which is unprepared to deal with the AIDS crisis that is referenced in the film
