The Biological Sciences & Biomedical Sciences Research Seminar Series presents Dr. Mohannad Ghazi Al-Saghir discussing "Phylogenetic Analysis of the Genus Pistacia ( Anacardiaceae )" at 4 p.m. on Oct. 19.

AL-Saghir is Associate Professor of Biological Sciences at Ohio University.

For more information, contact the host, Robert A. Colvin .

Abstract : Mohannad AL-Saghir was born in Irbid, Jordan. He joined Ohio University Zanesville in 2006. He holds a P.D. in Biology from Virginia Tech. He is a microbiologist and plant biologist by training. He has taught many classes in microbiology and plant biology. His research is centered on Plant Systematics and Evolution and his past and current work is focused on developing molecular phylogenies of economically important genera that have major crop plants such as barley, peanut and pistachio.

His microbiology research is focused on detection and enumeration of fecal coliforms in drinking water in Dillion Lake and Muskingum River in Ohio. He is working also on metagenomic analysis of microbial community associated with coral mucus from the Gulf of Aqaba.

He is investigating the effect of various types of reactive oxygen species ( ROS ) and reactive nitrogen species ( RNS ) on DNA stability in several microorganisms including bacteria, fungi, viruses, parasites, and animal cells.

His most recent publication is Metagenomic analysis of microbial community associated with coral mucus from the Gulf of Aqaba. Heliyon 5 (2019) e02876.
