ONEER IN THE REVITALIZATION & AFRICANIZATION OF THE CATHOLIC LITURGY AND MA
SS IN GHANA."\n\n \n\nProf. Younge's book recounts the life of Augustine Kw
asiga Younge\, who in the late 1950s\, became concerned about the general C
atholic congregations’ aspirations\, which led to gradually drifting away i
nto other churches because of the non–appealing nature of hymns and other
songs performed during Mass. He realized the urge to inject more African Cu
lture into Catholic worship to revitalize the Liturgy and Mass. In a solo e
ffort\, he started a revolution in the Church’s music in Ghana by initially
replacing the “Old Latin Hymns” with traditional tunes accompanied by Afri
can percussion instruments. As his determination persisted\, he found himse
lf in the greatest imbroglio as some church elders and musicians cast insin
uations for what they believed to be the anti-Christ (Catholic). Coincident
ally at this very time\, there was an Apostolic Constitution decree from Ro
me on liturgical reforms to fit and blend other non–Latin traditions\, cult
ures\, and music.
