Chemistry Colloquium: Dr. Celedonio M. Álvarez: Wed, Apr 17, 2024

The Chemistry & Biochemistry Colloquium guest speaker for April 17th will be Professor Celedonio M. Álvarez: "An Interesting Journey through the Supramolecular Interactions of Non-Planar Polyaromatic Compounds". Dr. Álvarez is Profesor Titular, Química Inorgánica at the Universidad de Valladolid, Spain.

Since its establishment, supramolecular chemistry has been used to design and develop new entities with a wide range of applications in various areas of science. The rational design and development of functional complex architectures capable of interacting with nanometer-sized carbon allotropes, especially fullerenes, in a supramolecular fashion is a challenging current topic. However, the architecture design of efficient systems of this type is not always straightforward since it depends on a delicate balance of favorable and unfavorable interactions and requires an understanding of the different subtle factors at play. In this talk, a fascinating journey carried out in our laboratory will be presented using our results in the last few years as guidance. It will take into account the number of motives that take part in the supramolecular interaction focusing on the non-planar polyaromatic compound corannulene and the environmental properties that allow structural changes that impact significatively on the strength of the interaction. This will cover a wide range of central structure cores bearing different numbers of corannulenes ranging from organometallic centers to porphyrin tethers.
