ersity alumnus John Wetzel discusses careers in the pharmaceutical industry
and job searching strategies with students on March 28 from 4:10 to 5:05 p
.m. in Walter 245.\n\nSince 2005\, Dr. John M. Wetzel has been the Principa
l of at Wetzel Chemistry Consulting LLC\, providing chemistry leadership fo
r clients in both drug discovery and drug development. Wetzel Chemistry is
based in the Athens\, OH\, area. He consults primarily for start-up pharmac
eutical companies in drug development\, and several projects on which he co
nsulted received marketing approval from the FDA. \n\n \n\nWetzel received
a College of Arts & Sciences Notable Alumni Award in 2019. He earned a B.S.
in Chemistry from the OHIO College of Arts & Sciences in 1982. Wetzel stud
ied synthetic organic chemistry and received a Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1988 f
rom Johns Hopkins University. He also was a visiting scientist at the Sunto
ry Institute for Bioorganic Chemistry\, Osaka\, Japan from 1988 to 1990.\n\
n \n\nBefore forming Wetzel Chemistry Consulting in 2005\, Wetzel held rese
arch positions at Lundbeck Research\, Synaptic Pharmaceutical Corp.\, and t
he Suntory Institute for Bioorganic Research.\n\n \n\nAt Synaptic Pharmaceu
tical in Paramus\, NJ\, Wetzel held various positions from 1990 to 2003\, c
ulminating in Director of Chemistry. He continued there until 2005 after Sy
naptic became Lundbeck Research USA.\n\n \n\nAs an undergraduate student at
OHIO\, Wetzel performed undergraduate research with professors Jack Blazyk
\, William Huntsman and Jared Butcher. He once taught CHEM123 as a visiting
professor and previously collaborated with the research group of Dr. Steph
en Bergmeier\, professor and chair of Chemistry & Biochemistry and a member
of the Molecular and Cellular Biology program in the College of Arts & Sci
ences.\n\n \n\nThis event is part of the Chemistry & Biochemistry Colloquiu
m series.
