Chemistry Colloquium: Dr. Nathaniel Rosi: Wed, Mar 20, 2024

Dr. Nathaniel Rosi will be the guest speaker for the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry Colloquium. Dr. Rosi is the Covestro Professor of Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh. The title of the presentation is "Bundling organic molecules in metal-organic frameworks: expansion of compositional and structural complexity and new platforms for organic synthesis" .

Abstract:

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous crystalline scaffold-like materials consisting of metal-based vertices interconnected by organic molecular linkers. They are widely known for their record porosity and their promise for energy storage, molecular separations, water harvesting, drug delivery, catalysis, etc. This presentation will introduce a special class of MOFs that inherently organize organic linker molecules into small spatially-confined bundles. Specific focus will be given to the design and synthesis of these materials as well as how linker bundling can be leveraged to i) expand the structural and compositional diversity of MOFs and ii) provide new opportunities for organic synthesis.
