DESCRIPTION:Contemporary History | Preventing International Terrorism in th
e 1970s\, April 7\n\nThe Contemporary History Institute presents Dr. Silke
Zoller discussing “Preventing International Terrorism in the 1970s” on Apri
l 7 at 4:30 p.m. in Bentley 223 and via Teams.\n\nJoin on Teams. \n\nIn the
early 1970s\, hijackings and similar terrorist attacks increasingly happen
ed around the world. Officials in Western Europe\, the United States\, Cana
da\, and Japan began collaborating in response. They passed a range of mult
ilateral agreements against terrorist acts which\, they hoped\, would deter
new attacks and motivate states to punish attackers. These agreements subs
tantially shaped how the industrialized Global North would conceptualize th
e threat of “international terrorism” in the decades to come. \n\n \n\nZoll
er is an assistant professor of history at Kennesaw State University. Her r
esearch focuses on international collaboration against terrorism and politi
cal violence in the second half of the 20th century. She is the author of T
o Deter and Punish: Global Collaboration Against Terrorism in the 1970s. Si
lke earned a Ph.D. in History from Temple University in 2018. She also has
an M.A. in Early Modern and Modern History from Tübingen University in Germ
any. Silke previously held postdoctoral fellowships at the Clements Center
for National Security at the University of Texas\, Austin\, and the John Sl
oan Dickey Center for International Understanding at Dartmouth College.
