The Kennedy Museum of Art’s April Family Open Studio will begin with a conversation about Asiru Olatunde’s aluminum repoussé (flat panel with a raised image), which is a part of the current exhibition,  Centering Black Artists . Asiru Olatunde originally trained as a blacksmith before making panels similar to the one at the Kennedy Museum of Art, which typically features imagery from Biblical stories alongside parts of everyday life in Nigeria. The process Olatunde used to make those pieces involves a technique called reverse-hammering which is also used for tin-punching, the activity participants will be engaging with during the open studio. This process will be done using small tin sheets, nails, and hammers. We will have a variety of designs available for participants to use as a guide for the activity, but they are also welcome to reverse-hammer their own designs. Participants will leave with a new understanding of tin-punching and their own personal creations!
