Demands for self-determination - the right to choose - emphasize justice, liberty, and freedom from authoritarian rule. As a global phenomenon, disputesover self-determination occur across all regime types for a distinct identity and self-governance. Although the United Nations Charter guarantees the rightto self-determination, not all self-determination movements receive similar support to achieve statehood. This talk will discuss the conditions under whichself-determination movements succeed or fail specifically in the context and geopolitics of decolonization.
