Global education event for K-6 graders

Project Overview

Global education is defined as any program that aims to develop global competence: the attitude, skills, and knowledge needed to understand and participate in a globally connected world. The needs for global education at P12 schools are clearly addressed by the Ohio Department of Education as well-developed global competencies could prepare Ohio citizens to live, work and participate in the global economy.  To develop students’ global competencies, the Ohio Department of Education proposes to connect the classroom to the work and make students and teaching go global.  The ultimate goal is to make students understand the world by meeting and interacting with people from other countries.

Aligning with the Ohio Department of Education’s proposed global education, we are delighted to hold a global education program (Global Education Fairs) at Athens P-12 schools, with a collaboration with the AAPI-LEAD organization at Ohio University, The Center for International Studies, and the Athens City School District in the local community.

Event Goals

  • Promote P-12 students’ multicultural awareness.
  • Increase P-12 students’ knowledge of diverse cultural groups and countries.
  • Develop P-12 students’ globalization citizenship.
  • Foster a diverse, inclusive, and culturally responsive environment at P-12 schools.
  • Provide opportunities for Ohio University international students and scholars to engage with local P-12 schools and increase their sense of belonging to the local community.

Event Activities:

International students at Ohio University will present their cultures and engage P-12 students in hands-on activities to learn about different countries.   Each fair will last about 2 hours.

  • Students will be given a blank passport at the beginning of the fair.
  • They will tour different “countries” (the exhibition tables from different cultural groups) and learn about their cultures.  They need to complete some cultural learning activities or pass a quiz to get a visa (stamp) from that country.
  • When they collect all stamps, they can be granted a certificate of multicultural education.
