We are pleased to announce that in partnership with the College of Fine Arts, the School of Theater, the Latin American Studies Program and the Ohio University Pan African Alumni Network, the Caribbean Scholars’ Association will be hosting a special guest lecture on Decolonial Performance: Theatre, Music and Dance. Our esteemed speakers are: 

Dr. Vibert C. Cambridge is professor emeritus, in the School of Media Arts and Studies, Ohio University, President, of the Guyana Cultural Association of New York, and recipient of Guyana’s Golden Arrow of Achievement will will focus on The Guyana National Cultural Corp, a multi-disciplinary socialist experiment that featured performances of the mobile theater. This included the performance of skits including many folk elements! Once in a while “Antabanta” and “Macadingo” showed up and there could be “flouncing!” or the performance of the masquerade.

Mr. Eugene Williams who is a former Director of the Jamaica School of Drama, Edna Manley College will participate virtually in a discussion form presentation. He has been involved in theatre for over 50 years. He has received the Best Director Award from Actor Boy Awards in Jamaica for the play Arawak Gold and the Silver Musgrave Medal from the Institute of Jamaica for his contributions to drama education. discussion will focus on the development of theatre in the Caribbean and the emergence of new work today. 

Dr. Uzoma Miller is currently an Assistant Professor of Instruction and The Undergraduate Advising Coordinator for the Department of African American Studies, and a composer, songwriter, and performer in the reggae tradition. His presentation will feature his autoethnographic discourse, “Roots, Roots, Roots but We Intellect: Reggae’s Force as Diasporic Revolutionary Stimuli,” which interrogates and showcases the dynamic nature of the art form as a potent cultural bridge.
