roots of coal continue to permeate the rituals of daily life in Appalachia
even as its economic power wanes. The journey of a coal miner's daughter ex
ploring the region's dreams and myths\, untangling the pain and beauty.\n\n
\n\nA lyrical tapestry of a place and people\, "King Coal" meditates on th
e complex history and future of the coal industry\, the communities it has
shaped\, and the myths it has created. Oscar-nominated filmmaker Elaine McM
illion Sheldon reshapes the boundaries of documentary filmmaking in a spect
acularly beautiful and deeply moving immersion into Central Appalachia wher
e coal is not just a resource\, but a way of life.\n\n \n\nWhile deeply sit
uated in the communities under the reign of "King Coa"l\, where McMillion S
heldon has lived and worked her entire life\, the film transcends time and
place\, emphasizing the ways in which all are connected through an immersiv
e mosaic of belonging\, ritual\, and imagination. Emerging from the long sh
adows of the coal mines\, "King Coal" untangles the pain from the beauty\,
and illuminates the innately human capacity for change.\n\n \n\nAbout the D
irector:\n\nElaine McMillion Sheldon is an Academy Award-nominated and Emmy
and Peabody Award-winning documentary filmmaker. She is the director of tw
o Netflix Original Documentaries - "Heroin(e)" and "Recovery Boys" - that e
xplore America's opioid crisis. "Heroin(e)" was nominated for a 2018 Academ
y Award and won the 2018 Emmy Award for Outstanding Short Documentary. In 2
013\, she released "Hollow\," an interactive documentary that examines the
future of rural America through the eyes and voices of West Virginians. \n\
n \n\n“Hollow" received a Peabody\, Emmy nomination and 3rd Prize in the Wo
rld Press Photo Multimedia Awards. Sheldon has appeared on The Daily Show w
ith Trevor Noah\, Anthony Bourdain's CNN Show Parts Unknown and Meet The Pr
ess with Chuck Todd. She was recently named a 2018 USA Fellow by United Sta
tes Artists\, one of the "25 New Faces of Independent Film" by Filmmaker Ma
gazine and one of "50 People Changing The South" by Southern Living Magazin
e. In 2016\, Chicken & Egg Pictures awarded her with the inaugural "Breakth
rough Filmmaker" award. She's a founding member of All Y'all Southern Docum
entary Collective. She has been commissioned by Netflix\, Frontline PBS\, T
he Center for Investigative Reporting\, The New York Times Op-Docs\, TEDWom
en\, Field of Vision\, and The Bitter Southerner.
