Let's Talk Reproductive Rights: Medical Edition, Oct. 17

The first of three programs in a series about reproductive health is a discussion on the past, present, and future of reproductive rights from a medical perspective. This discussion around the medical side of reproductive health is Monday, Oct. 17, from noon-1:00 p.m. in the Women’s Center (403 Baker).

There will be a panel including Dr. Jackie Wolf, (professor emeritus of social medicine, that will examine the history of abortion before  Roe v. Wade . Abortion was legal in early America. Not until the mid-19 th  century did politicians use anti-immigration sentiment to outlaw abortion state-by-state. Wolf will discuss the historical relationship between the outlawing of abortion and high maternal mortality and will describe the events just before  Roe v. Wade  that created a public consensus that abortion should be legalized in every state. There will also be medical students from Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine on the panel. Shivani Deshpande and Amanda Burgess will talk about how Dobbs is impacting the training of medical doctors. They will also discuss what they see for the future of doctors and reproductive health training.
