This rece ption will commemorate the Center's 25+ year history and serve as a rededic ation to the Center's mission of education\, connection\, celebration\, and support. Ohio University officially established its “GLBT Center” in 1998 prior to changing the name to “LGBT Center” in 1999. Constituents and visit ors regularly question the LGBT Center’s name because it does not include a “Q” for “queer” or a “+” representing other queer identities (as in the ac ronym\, “LGBTQ+”). Furthermore\, the term LGBTQIAA+\, which commonly stands for “lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender\, queer\, intersex\, asexual\, and aromantic\,” is at times critiqued for highlighting some identities an d not others. Recognizing the limitations of acronyms\, Ohio University's S tudent Senate unamimously passed a bill supporting a change in name from “L GBT Center” to “Pride Center” in October 2023.
