In the philo sophy of mind\, externalism is the view that what is going on in an individ ual’s mind is not (entirely) determined by what is going on inside her body \, including her brain. This perspective provides a robust framework for un derstanding how language learners construct meaning through their interacti ons with the world around them. This paper highlights the importance of ext ernal influences on word meaning by examining the role of context\, social engagement\, and real-world experiences in shaping linguistic understanding . It therefore challenges traditional pedagogical approaches to teaching vo cabulary/word meaning by arguing for the need to approach the process more holistically by considering external factors.\n\n \n\nAlso via TEAMS\n\nJoi n the meeting now\n\nMeeting ID: 253 514 611 379\n\nPasscode: 4V4sJq DTEND:20241109T065000Z DTSTAMP:20240920T083245Z DTSTART:20241108T175500Z GEO:39.32476;-82.099349 LOCATION:Gordy Hall\, 309 SEQUENCE:0 SUMMARY:Linguistics Colloquium: "Meanings Just Ain't in the Head"—Semantic Externalism UID:tag:localist.com\,2008:EventInstance_47119442149340 URL:https://calendar.ohio.edu/event/linguistics-colloquium-meanings-just-ai nt-in-the-headsemantic-externalism END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
