The Linguistics Department presents Dr. Nuo Xu discussing "Challenges to achieving critical consciousness: Chinese teachers' raciolinguistic ideologies and literacy practices in dual language bilingual education"

Abstract : This study employs a raciolinguistic perspective and draws on concepts of critical consciousness to explore the lived experiences of Chinese dual language bilingual education (DLBE) teachers and how their raciolinguistic ideologies influence their perceived instructional literacy practices. Through semi-structured interviews with 10 secondary Chinese DLBE teachers in Utah, this study seeks to understand their narratives. The results show that the teachers' varied experiences shape their views on language and race, influencing their literacy pedagogies. Despite their efforts to enhance bilingual and biliteracy development, these teachers largely avoided discussions on critical issues of race, power, and equity, thereby neglecting the foundational goal of DLBE to foster critical consciousness. This study reveals the need to support Chinese DLBE teachers in critically analyzing their raciolinguistic ideologies and implementing literacy pedagogies that confront oppressive practices and promote equity in Mandarin Chinese DLBE settings. Implications for educators, school leaders, policymakers, and families are also discussed.

Dr. Xu is an Assistant Professor of Teacher Education at Bowling Green State University. Xu  is also an alumna of the MA Applied Linguistics program '16.
