Linguistics Colloquium | Extramural English in a Danish context: use and learning, Nov. 17

The Linguistics Colloquium series presents Dr. Signe Hannibal Jensen discussing “Extramural English in a Danish context: use and learning” on Nov. 17 from 12:55 - 1:50 p.m. in Gordy 313 and via Microsoft TEAMS.

Hannibal Jensen is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Language, Culture, History and Communication at the University of Southern Denmark.

Abstract : English shows an unmistakable presence across the globe, not least digitally. In Scandinavia in particular, the presence is felt also for children as many go online at a very early age (Sylvén, 2022; Thorhauge. et al., 2016). This means that many children have a substantial knowledge of English prior to formalized teaching (De Wilde et.al., 2022; Lefever, 2010; Sundqvist & Sylvén, 2016).  With a point of departure in the global digital presence of English, I present two studies from a Danish context. In part one, I relate the findings from a qualitative study of a young girl’s (11-12) English-language fan practices on TikTok, thus showcasing how some children engage with English in an extramural (outside school) setting, thereby encountering many language learning affordances. Part two, related to the primary school level, presents reflections from English teachers in Denmark on the presence of global English and the implications hereof for teaching and learning.
