Linguistics Colloquium | Incorporating Chat GPT in EFL Lesson with PIC-RAT Model, Oct. 20

The Linguistics Colloquium series presents  Agam Syahrial discussing “Incorporating Chat GPT in EFL Lesson with PIC-RAT Model” on Oct. 20 from 12:55 - 1:50 p.m. in Gordy 313 and via Microsoft TEAMS.

Agam is a second year Ph.D. student in the Instructional Technology program at Ohio University and an alumnus of the M.A. Applied Linguistics program at Ohio University.

Abstract : Following the worries over the use and misuse of Chat GPT, bans on the use of chatbot have been happening. However, access to Chat GPT is inevitable. Thus, a more realistic option is to embrace Chat GPT as a teaching aid that we could use to unlock student creativity, offer personalized tutoring, and better prepare students to work alongside AI systems in the future. This project shows how the generative AI language model can be adopted to support EFL teaching to benefit both teachers and students. The PIC-RAT model for technology integration is used to incorporate Chat GPT in EFL lessons. The lesson design highlights how Chat GPT can both be incorporated with considering students creative and active learning and teacher pedagogy. My reflection from this project concludes that first, Chat GPT offers EFL learners’ opportunities to practice language skills and EFL instructors to innovate in teaching. Second, PIC-RAT model provides clear guidance on technology integration for both learners and teachers, enabling effective use of Chat GPT while prioritizing a well-rounded language learning experience. Third, the expertise and guidance of a EFL instructors is still pivotal over the possible bias and inaccuracy of generated information on Chat GPT.
