Enjoy a night of musical contrasts with the operatic double bill of Pauline Viardot's  Cinderella  ( Cendrillon ) and Leonard Bernstein's  Trouble in Tahiti .

Cinderella is a charming chamber operetta based on the fairy tale of Cinderella. Originally written in French, this performance will be performed in an English translation. The work, which premiered in Viardot's Paris salon in 1904, features a cast of seven principal singers and a piano accompaniment. It follows the familiar story of the mistreated heroine, her bumbling stepfather, her wicked stepsisters, her fairy godmother, and her handsome prince, but with some delightful twists and turns along the way.

Trouble in Tahiti  is a dark and satirical one-act opera that explores the disillusionment and alienation of a suburban American couple in the 1960s. The opera, which debuted in 1952, showcases Bernstein's eclectic musical style, blending jazz and classical elements. It also features a vocal trio that acts as a Greek chorus, commenting on the action. The opera exposes the emptiness and hypocrisy of the American dream, as well as the racism and sexism of the era.

Please note that  Trouble in Tahiti  contains verbal and emotional abuse, simulated violence, partial nudity, and is a historical piece which includes mistreatment of people and cultures. These racist and sexist stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong today. The opera is intended for mature audiences (ages 14+).
