ecture by Wayne A. Davis on “Epistemic Fallibilism\, Necessity\, and Certai
nty” on Thursday\, March 3\, 2022\, at 4 p.m. in Porter 104.\n\n \n\nDavis’
s talk will be livestreamed for those who cannot attend in person. To atten
d virtually\, please register for the livestreaming.\n\n \n\nDavis is profe
ssor emeritus of philosophy and president of the Faculty Senate at Georgeto
wn University. His research interests are centered in philosophy of mind\,
philosophy of language\, epistemology\, and logic\, with a main focus on th
e nature of mental states (particularly belief\, desire\, and thought) and
the concept of meaning.\n\n \n\nDavis is the author of An Introduction to L
ogic (Prentice-Hall\, 1986)\, Implicature (Cambridge\, 1998)\, Meaning\, Ex
pression\, and Thought (Cambridge\, 2003)\, Nondescriptive Meaning and Refe
rence (Oxford\, 2005)\, and Irregular Negations\, Implicature\, and Idioms
(Springer 2016). He has authored numerous articles on logic\, philosophy of
science\, epistemology\, philosophical psychology\, philosophy of language
\, and pragmatics in Philosophical Review\, Mind\, Philosophical Studies\,
Noûs\, Linguistics and Philosophy\, The Journal of Pragmatics\, Intercultur
al Pragmatics\, and other journals. He is editor-in-chief of Philosophical
Studies.\n\n \n\nThe Ohio University Philosophy Forum\, established in 1994
\, gives students the opportunity to study recent work of leading philosoph
ers. Every spring term\, the graduate students in the Philosophy Department
in the College of Arts & Sciences take a seminar on the recent work of the
year’s forum speaker\, and later in the term\, the students meet the speak
er for three days\, attending a public lecture and three intensive seminars
led by the speaker.\n\n \n\nThe Forum has brought to campus prominent phil
osophers such as Robert Nozick\, Daniel Dennett\, Hilary Putnam\, Alasdair
MacIntyre\, Cora Diamond\, Arthur Fine\, Simon Blackburn\, Susan Haack\, Ju
lia Annas\, Lynne Rudder Baker\, T. M. Scanlon\, James Woodward\, Michael W
illiams\, Kirk Ludwig\, Bas van Fraassen\, Ruth Millikan\, Noel Carroll\, P
eter Godfrey-Smith\, Philip Kitcher\, Michael Bratman\, Elliot Sober\, John
Burgess\, Marya Schechtman\, John Doris\, and Rachana Kamtekar.
