The Physics & Astronomy Colloquium Series presents Ken Burch of LASE, Laboratory for Assembly and Spectroscopy of Emergence, Boston College discussing “2D Materials" on Oct. 15.

Abstract: A key challenge in condensed matter is identifying, understanding and ultimately controlling new phases. In this talk I will introduce the concept of topology as new means to characterize long range order and its utility for future quantum computing platforms. To this end, our group has focused on discovering new modes and measuring their properties as a means to investigate such states.

I will focus on the combination of topology and superconductivity which provides a powerful tool for investigating fundamental physics as well as a route to fault-tolerant quantum computing. Specifically our recent results demonstrating the presence of Helical Hinge Zero Modes (HHZM) using exfoliated heterostructures in FeTeSe. Time permitting I will briefly touch on other recent advances in our lab including sensing bacteria with graphene, the discovery of an Axial Higgs mode via quantum interference and fractional spin excitations in RuCl3.
