DESCRIPTION:The Physics & Astronomy Colloquium Series presents James J. Col
lins of Dept. of Biological Engineering\, MIT\; Wyss Institute\, Harvard Un
iversity\; Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard discussing “Synthetic Biology
: Life Redesigned" on Nov. 19.\n\nColloquia are Fridays at 4:10 p.m.\n\n \n

hone Conference ID: 189 025 74# \n\nAbstract: Synthetic biology is bringin
g together engineers\, physicists and biologists to model\, design and cons
truct biological circuits out of proteins\, genes and other bits of DNA\, a
nd to use these circuits to rewire and reprogram organisms. These re-engin
eered organisms are going to change our lives in the coming years\, leading
to cheaper drugs\, rapid diagnostic tests\, and synthetic probiotics to tr
eat infections and a range of complex diseases.\n\n \n\nIn this talk\, we h
ighlight recent efforts to create synthetic gene networks and programmable
cells\, and discuss a variety of synthetic biology applications in biotechn
ology and biomedicine.
