his session. \n\n \n\nThis session will explore the weakening of the Voting
Rights Act and election reforms in recent years and the potential impact o
n the upcoming 2024 elections. Ohio Alumnus\, Author\, and President and CE
O of the Promise of Democracy Foundation\, Inc. Greg Moore will cover a bri
ef history of electoral reforms which have broadened access to the ballot a
nd the important role that Ohio has played in the ongoing voting rights mov

kucharsky@ohio.edu. \n\n \n\nAbout the virtual presenter: \n\nGregory T. Mo
ore is considered one of the nation’s leading voting rights advocates. He i
s currently President and CEO of the Promise of Democracy Foundation\, Inc.
\, a non-profit organization where he continues his lifelong commitment to
the expansion of democracy\, voting rights and civic education. For the pas
t 30 years\, Moore has held several key roles in Washington\, DC and the st
ate of Ohio including serving as the Executive Director of the NAACP-Nation
al Voter Fund\, Legislative Director and Chief of Staff for the late Rep. J
ohn Conyers\, Jr.\, Deputy Political Director of the Democratic National Co
mmittee\, Senior Strategist for the Leadership Conference on Civil and Huma
n Rights. \n\nMoore helped lead a 5-year advocacy effort to reform our nati
on’s archaic voter registration laws and was instrumental in helping to ste
er the final passage of the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 (The “M
otor Voter” Act). He has worked for years for expanded ballot access and in
creased civic participation among underserved communities. Moore currently
serves as Chair of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission’s National Board
of Advisors in Washington\, DC and is author of the recently released book
\, Beyond the Voting Rights Act: The Untold Story of the Struggle to Reform
America’s Voter Registration Laws. \n\nMoore has been instrumental in seve
ral national groundbreaking initiatives from his days as a student activist
on the campus of Ohio University to his most recent advocacy work protecti
ng voting rights in the state of Ohio. In the 1980s he was elected the Stud
ent Senate President and was instrumental in re-establishing an elected stu
dent government At Ohio University after it was dissolved in the late 1970s
. He was later elected nationwide as the first African American President o
f the United States Student Association\, at the time\, the nation’s oldest
and largest national student association. \nHe went on to later serve as a
presidential appointee to the Martin Luther King\, Jr. Federal Holiday Com
mission where he worked with Mrs. Coretta Scott King and fellow commissione
rs to establish the nation’s first official observances of the MLK Federal
Holiday across the U.S. While serving as Director of the Voting Rights Inst
itute at the DNC\, Moore led the efforts that established the Democratic pa
rty’s first 50-state election protection program throughout the U.S. \nMost
recently he has been highly active in the Ohio redistricting reform campai
gns and voting rights initiatives. In 2021 he was appointed the Co-Chair of
the Ohio Citizens Redistricting Commission and in 2023 help led the statew
ide efforts to preserve Ohio ‘right of referendum through the No on Issue #
1 campaign last August. \n\nMoore is a graduate of Ohio University with a
Bachelor of Arts Degree in Organizational Communications from the Scripps S
chool of Communications\, and just recently completed his Master of Public
Administration from the George Voinovich School of Leadership and Public S
ervice in December 2021. He is a proud and active alumni Bobcat and current
ly serves as the Vice Chair of the OU Alumni Association’ Board of Director
s and serves as the OUAA’s Liaison to the Ohio University Foundation Board
of Directors. He is an active member of the Ebony Bobcat Alumni Network\, (
EBN) and was the co-founder and the first president of the Ohio University
Student Senate Alumni Society. In 2022 President Hugh Sherman selected him
to serve on the President’s Council where he continues to advise Ohio’s cu
