About this Event
20 South Court Street, Athens, Ohio 45701
The Ohio University History Association hosts a panel and screening of the Summer of Soul on Wednesday, Nov. 10, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Athena Cinema on Court Street.
The Summer of Soul covers six weeks during the summer of 1969 in the United States when thousands of people attended the Harlem Cultural Festival to celebrate Black history, culture, music, and fashion.
The panel will include professors Chester Pach (History), Jason Rawls (Education), and Andre Gribou (Fine Arts). They will contextualize the history of the film in the 1960s (Black history and music history), examine the film through a lens of hip-hop culture, and discuss the making of artistic films.
The event is free and open to all OHIO affiliates and Athens community members. Doors open at 5:30, and seating is first-come, first-served. Per Athena's policy, guests must bring proof of vaccination and wear masks inside the facility.
