y\nUCLA Herb Alpert School of Music \n\n \n\nDr. Supeena Insee Adler will l
ead a music workshop in which participants will learn about traditional Tha
i music from northeast of Thailand. Ponglang music is lively\, characterize
d by rhythmic melodies. This genre of music has been performed at local fes
tivals\, celebrations\, and social gatherings for centuries. The Ponglang e
nsemble includes the centerpiece\, the "Ponglang\," a northeastern style fo
lk xylophone\, "Kaen\," a bamboo free-reed mouth organ\, "Pin\," a Northeas
t style three string pluck lute\, pan flute\, gong\, cymbals\, gongs and a
set of drums. \n\nNote: The participants will be invited to performed toget
her with Dr. Adler at Thai Night on the following day.\n\n \n\nRefreshments
provided.\n\n \n\nThis event is presented by Asian Studies and the World L
anguages Program of the Center for International Studies in conjunction wit
h the College of Fine Arts and the School of Interdisciplinary Arts.\n\n \n
