The School of Visual Communication (VisCom) is honored to host The Black Exhibit, an invitational exhibit of digital illustration, animation, video, and photography showcasing the work from 26 African Diaspora alumni, faculty, and current students. VisCom has a rich history of educating talented students from the African Diaspora. The goal of this exhibit is to educate the public on the vast talents these artists and photographers use daily in communicating important stories to the world.
This unique exhibit includes:
• Works from Pulitzer Prize winner Frank Franklin II and three-time Pulitzer Prize winner Michel du Cille.
• Former VisCom faculty member and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, Terence Oliver’s Martin Luther King Jr illustration for the Akron Beacon Journal.
• Recent VisCom graduate Micah Fluellen’s LA Times illustration as Pulitzer finalist.
• VisCom alumni as photo editors making decisions about newspapers’ front pages from presidential inaugurations to Superbowl coverage.
• Cover art for Delta Jewels, Alysia Burton Steele’s book.
• Animation illustrations of Muhammad Ali and James Arthur Baldwin.
• Photographs used for a NYT obit or art museum pieces.
• Katherine and Mariel Tyler, aka “The Tyler Twins,” who submitted Alicia Keys latest album artwork.
The Black Exhibit opens Feb. 1 in THE VISCOM FOCUS, formerly the Visual Communication gallery, with a public reception that will take place Saturday, February 10, 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. outside the gallery. The exhibit will end Monday, Feb. 26. THE VISCOM FOCUS hours are Monday thru Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. THE VISCOM FOCUS is located at 140 Schoonover Center at 8 E. Union St., Athens, OH
