BEGIN:VCALENDAR VERSION:2.0 CALSCALE:GREGORIAN PRODID:iCalendar-Ruby BEGIN:VEVENT CATEGORIES:Meetings & Conferences DESCRIPTION:Professors holding information sessions about spring break biol ogy program in Panama\, Sept. 14\, 16 and 19\n\nOhio University students in terested in exploring biodiversity and ecology in Panama must attend an inf ormation session in September with College of Arts & Sciences Professors Wi llem Roosenburg and Harvey Ballard to find out more about PBIO 4850/BIOS 49 00 Tropical Biology Program in Panama\, a field course where students will spend spring break 2023 in Panama.\n\n \n\nStudents will be comparing flora and fauna in pristine rainforest\, selectively logged rainforest\, pasture tracts\, swamps\, and coastal areas in the Central American country.\n\n \ n\n"This course include pre-departure lectures before spring break so we'll get to know each other before we depart\, and we'll be ready to dive into the field work once we hit the ground in Panama\," said Ballard\, professor of Environmental and Plant Biology. "We'll be taking field hikes to learn common plants and animals\, natural history\, evolutionary principles and t rophic interactions\, and discuss community organization in diverse terrest rial habitats."\n\n \n\n"We'll be investigating biological diversity\, basi c ecological principles\, evolutionary pattern and process\, cross-species interactions\, and current conservation issues effecting terrestrial and ma rine tropical environments\," said Roosenburg\, professor of Biological Sci ences.\n\n \n\nHe added that students will be snorkeling to learn common ma rine organisms and to investigate coral reef and mangrove community diversi ty and ecology. SCUBA-certified students also can participate in a diving e xcursion. The biologists also will lead night-time field trips to observe n octurnal insects\, reptiles\, and amphibians.\n\n \n\nThe experiential fiel dwork also includes tree canopy climbing in small groups to explore canopy diversity and ecology and excursions to a sustainable chocolate farm\, a ba t hibernaculum\, and an abandoned teak farm with a thriving tarantula popul ation.\n\n \n\nInformation sessions are:\n\nWednesday\, Sept. 14\, from 5:3 0-6:30 p.m. in Irvine 159Friday\, Sept. 16\, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in Irvine 159Monday\, Sept. 19\, form 5:30-6:30 p.m. in Porter 104 \n\nInterested stu dents must attend one of these three information sessions.
