Mary Beth Tinker, one of the students in the historic U.S. Supreme Court case Tinker v. Des Moines, will speak about student First Amendment rights. The public is invited to meet one of the people who established, as Justice Abe Fortas wrote in the 7-2 decision, students and teachers do not "shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate." The case was filed after Tinker, her brother and others wore black armbands to protest the Vietnam War.
