OCOM 708 - Eyes, Ears, Nose and Throat


This course introduces students to the medical disciplines of ophthalmology and otorhinolaryngology, particularly in the four areas of red eye, vision loss, hearing loss and upper respiratory complaints. The biomedical disciplines of anatomy, microanatomy, physiology and immunology as they pertain to the head and neck are examined, providing the foundation for pertinent clinical sciences. Students will be introduced to physical examination of the eyes, ears, nose and throat. On successful completion of this course, students are able to explain and understand the core concepts of functional anatomy of head and neck tissues; normal development and embryopathies of the head and neck; visual function; auditory function; vestibular function; chemosensation; mastication and deglutition; diseases of the ear, nose, paranasal sinuses, oral cavity, pharynx and larynx; and diseases that cause a red eye or lead to a loss of vision.
