Art of dance from broad point of view, involving dance viewing, literature, and participation. Deals with aesthetic, physiological, social, and cultural aspects.

Learning Outcomes:  
  • Acquire a deeper sense of their own place in the dance community through greater understanding of the legacies, histories, and traditions of dance.
  • Compare and contrast different dance genres and traditions.
  • Describe and analyze dances in terms of space, time, and energy.
  • Discuss and write about dance as an art form, as culture, and as an academic discipline.
  • Identify some of the most influential choreographers, works, and artistic movements of 20th and 21st century dance.
  • Identify the aesthetic conventions of different historical periods and place dances in relevant social and cultural contexts.
