JOUR 3310 - Reporting Public Issues


Learning to research, report, and write in-depth, interpretive, and analytical stories on current social problems and public affairs for print and online media.

Requisites: ENG 1510 and (JOUR 231A and 233) or (231 and 233) or 2310 or 2311 and JOUR major

Learning Outcomes:
  • Critically evaluate their own work and that of others for accuracy, fairness, clarity, appropriate style, and grammatical correctness.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of gender, race ethnicity, sexual orientation and, as appropriate, other forms of diversity in domestic society in relation to mass communications.
  • Demonstrate understanding of professional ethical principles and work ethically in pursuit of truth, accuracy, fairness, and diversity.
  • Find innovative ways to gain information; evaluate usefulness and accuracy of different types of information; and present information in a readable form.
  • Understand and apply basic journalistic and reporting concepts, including covering speeches, writing statistical, trend and beat stories, interviewing, and researching particular topics.
  • Understand and apply the principles and laws of freedom of speech and press.
