ME 4880 - Experimental Design Lab


Learn the use of basic lab equipment while constructing and testing measurement systems. Complete lab experiments using more advanced instrumentation systems, including various transducers, signal conditioning circuits, and data acquisition systems. Design and conduct experiments that support capstone mechanical design projects. Instruction provided on error analysis and the creation and editing of formal lab reports. Write multiple lab reports in executive summary style, and one formal lab report.

Requisites: (ENG 1510 or 1610) and ISE 3200 and ME 4701 and Soph or higher

Learning Outcomes:
  • Demonstrate safety in testing and laboratory work, including awareness of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Demonstrate the ability to design and conduct experiments on a realistic design project using real-world hardware.
  • Learn fundamental principles of experimentation to test and validate project design.
  • Understand measurement devices and hardware for the project implementation including sensors, actuators, and data acquisition system.
