PSC 1350 - Energy in a Modern World

Introduces students to the science of energy production, use and the subsequent consequences. Introduces students to the Laws of Thermodynamics: conservation of energy; limits on efficiency. Various energy sources will be investigated and their use and impact discussed. The sources discussed may include: solar; fossil fuel; nuclear; wind; hydro, biomass. The teaching method is primarily through exposition of concepts, the analysis of problems and the use of in-class questions. Assessment of students will involve students demonstrating both their abilities in quantitative and qualitative analysis of problems.

Requisites: Tier I Quantitative Skills
Credit Hours: 3
General Education Code: 2AS
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture
Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I
Learning Outcomes:
  • Successful students will be able to explain exponential growth/decline in energy use and use it predict energy consumption.
  • Successful students will be able to identify the impact of different energy source technologies and be able to compare and contrast them. They will be able to use scientific evidence to do this.
  • Successful students will be able to: determine the utility different insulation materials; compare different approaches to insulating a home; explain how home-owner choices can affect energy consumption.
  • Successful students will demonstrate an understanding of the first and second law of thermodynamics and their utility in judging arguments regarding the pros and cons of different energy sources.
  • Successful students will understand the impact of the use of energy upon society and the impact of society upon the way energy is used.
  • Successful students will: understand how the electrical supply industry developed; demonstrate their understanding of the principles of electric circuits, including current, voltage, resistance and power; learn how electrical energy is transmitted.
  • Successful will: be able to identify some units for energy and how to convert from one to another; learn the relationship between energy, work, and power.
