IHS 2230 - Introduction to Appalachian Studies


This course provides an introduction to the Appalachian region, including historical, cultural, and contemporary context and issues experienced by those who live in the region, and an examination of stereotypes associated with Appalachia.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to define the Appalachian region according to the Appalachian Regional Commission.
  • Students will be able to identify positive and negative stereotypes associated with Appalachia.
  • Students will be able to discuss factors, such as a single industry based economy, that have helped to create the Appalachian region.
  • Students will be able to identify strengths of the Appalachian region.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the region as it relates to current events.
