PHYS 2053 - Contemporary Physics: Relativity and Quantum Phenomena


Introduction to relativity and quantum theory: selected topics in atomic, solid state, nuclear, particles, and cosmology. Einstein’s theory of special relativity, the uncertainty principle, Schroedinger’s wave equation with applications, atomic structure, nuclear structure, elementary particles and a short introduction to cosmology.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Know basics of nuclear structure and nuclear quantum numbers, elementary particles and cosmology.
  • Know how to calculate kinematics for objects moving near the speed of light.
  • Solve Schroedinger’s equation in both one dimension and three dimensions.
  • Understand the basis of quantum theory and how to apply the uncertainty principle.
  • Understand the electron shell structure of simple atoms and their quantum numbers.
