BIOS 2200 - Conservation and Biodiversity


For nonmajors. Introduces the student to the modern field of conservation biology and the role of genetics, ecology, life history, and biogeography in the preservation and maintenance of biodiversity. Case studies of endangered animal and plant species will be highlighted.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to explain how ecological principles inform population recovery, conservation management, and the design of nature reserves.
  • Students will be able to apply the concepts of species diversity, genetics, evolution and ecology to understand the science of conservation biology.
  • Students will be able to appraise the relative importance of anthropogenic factors including habitat loss, invasive species, over-harvesting and climate change on current rates of extinction.
  • Students will be able to summarize environmental policy and the status and protection of species nationally and internationally.
  • Students will be able to describe the complexity of the world’s biodiversity.
  • Students will be able to discuss the ethical implications of maintaining global biodiversity.
