Examines the birth, growth, and development of rock music through its acceptance as art form with significant influence on youth culture and resulting social implications.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to summarize the cultural context of each major style of rock music - including the social/historical parameters that were part of each unique development.
  • Students will be able to describe the origins of rock music that came from the synthesis of American “blues/rhythm and blues”, “Country” (and Western) and the “Popular” music of the urban Northeast.
  • Students will be able to identify representative examples and explain the significance of songs, styles and artists of rock from the early 1950’s to the early 1970’s.
