THAR 2710 - Theater and Performance History I


This course explores performance, literature, and theatrical practices from pre-historical Africa, India, Asia, the Americas, and Europe, through the 17th century. We strive to better comprehend history through performance, and to develop the critical and aesthetic tools to appreciate and understand plays, rituals, design, and theories of theater in their original contexts, as well as in today’s world.

  • Have an understanding of key plays, playwrights, genres, artistic movements, and performance practices in relation to their historical contexts.
  • Identify and analyze key factors in the complex relationship between art and society, including the representation of gender, race, and class.
