ML 3280J - Translation as Writing: Spanish to English

Students learn to produce fluent English translations of Spanish texts, through a writing process that emphasizes continuous revision through instructor and peer critique in writing workshops and individual conferences. Students learn to evaluate their own writing with the aim of creating translations that are not only free of errors in grammar and vocabulary, but also readable, lucid, and logical. The course is structured around a series of projects; each of the first two deals with a different genre, while the third and longest is based on a text of the student’s choosing. Class time is devoted to workshopping, lectures and discussions on unique problems of translating from Spanish to English, and in-class writing and analytical exercises.
