ANTH 3570 - Anthropology of Religion
This course examines religion from an anthropological perspective through attention to healing systems, divinity, spirituality, the sacred, religious movements, religious leadership, ritual, magic, witchcraft, ancestor veneration and pilgrimage. The course considers the place of religion in everyday life, the study of religion in social science theory, moral and ethical reasoning, symbolism, ideology, idealism, materialism, individual and collective empowerment, and articulations between religion and other aspects of culture. The course considers a variety of religious systems around the world.

Learning Outcomes:
- Students will be able to explain and provide ethnographic examples of the place of religion in everyday life in the contemporary world..
- Students will be able to explain and compare how religion relates to power and politics, labor and exploitation, and domination and resistance in and across global contexts.
- Students will be able to articulate and critique prevailing theories of religion in the social sciences.
- Students will be able to empathetically describe the varieties of religious life found across time and space.
- Students will be able to describe their own preconceived notions about varieties of religious life including magic, witchcraft, sorcery and compare their own experiences with those of cultural others.
- Students will be able to demonstrate, through verbal and non-verbal communications, curiosity and compassion for peoples whose religious beliefs and practices are different from their own.
- Students will be able to demonstrate deeper and broader understanding of the role of religion in social life and the human condition.
