INST 1011 - Introduction to Diversity Studies


Introduces concepts important to understanding diversity, especially in the United States. Concepts such as privilege, domination, deculturalization, socialization, intersectionality, marginalization and others explored. Provides an introductory exploration in the domains of race/ethnicity, gender, class, sexual orientation and disability.

Learning Outcomes:  
  • Students will be able to recognize the domains of race/ethnicity, gender, class, sexual orientation and disability.
  • Students will be able to describe important contemporary issues related to diversity.
  • Students will be able to outline the conceptual underpinnings needed to understand diversity in the United States.
  • Students will be able to discuss how important historical and legal events/processes impact diverse populations today.
  • Students will be able to assess their own cultural beliefs and assumptions regarding diversity.
