INST 4001 - Diversity and Democracy


Synthesizes the fields of diversity, and our democratic society’s promise for transformation and social change. Studies the social, philosophical, ideological, and historical foundations of diversity in the United States and internationally and asks how we can become transformative change agents in creating and sustaining a more diverse and global citizenry.

Requisites: One course in Tier II Social Sciences or Humanities OR One Pillar course in Social or Behavioral Sciences or Humanities and Sr only

Learning Outcomes:  
  • Students will be able to analyze the fields of diversity studies and democratic theory and connect academic knowledge from multiple disciplines to relevant experiences.
  • Students will be able to examine and explain important contemporary issues related to diversity, democracy, and transformation as they apply the principles gained throughout the semester.
  • Students will be able to use information from multiple sources to synthesize knowledge on diversity and our democratic community, and demonstrate an understanding of the history, values, and politics of members of another culture.
  • Students will be able to ask complex questions of other cultures, and analyze social, philosophical, ideological and historical contexts and assumptions that form the foundations of diversity in the United States and globally.
