HLTH 3300 - Community Health Epidemiology


This course includes the basic principles and methods of epidemiology and its applications to community and public health. Course content also includes epidemiological concepts of risk and protective factors and basic design of epidemiological studies in the context of population health.

Requisites: HLTH 2000 and (PSY 1110 or 2110) and (Jr or Sr)
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Apply the basic principles and methods of epidemiology and its application to community and public health.
  • Explain appropriate applications of commonly used measures of disease frequency, rates, and ratios.
  • Explain appropriate applications of descriptive and analytical epidemiological studies.
  • Explain the basic principles and applications of disease screening.
  • Explain the use of epidemiological methods to estimate the extent of population health problems.
  • List major sources of population health data (such as governmental agencies and registries).
  • Understand the basic principles of data collection and analysis to evaluate population health and disease status.
  • Understand the principles of disease surveillance and outbreak investigation.
  • Understand the use of epidemiological methods to evaluate the effectiveness of intervention programs.
